Chaparral Basketball
By:Destiny Peffly

This year at Chaparral we have 21 girls and 30 boys going out for this season. The head coach of the boys basketball team is Josh Inslee. The head coach for the girls is Coach Cody Liebelt. The first week of basketball practice is all about getting in shape and covering drills. Boys have two practices one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Girls only have one in the afternoon, but they will sometimes have morning practices,as well practices typically last from 3:40 to 5:40.

The boys and girls first basketball game is on December 5. Coach Liebelts main goal this season is to improve effort and attitude, and Coach Islee’s main goal for this season is to get to regionals. One the main goals for the girls team is to beat Garden Plain and also to get to state.

Basketball is a very athletic sport, it will get you into shape fast. “My legs already are killing me and we’ve only had two practices!”- Abigail, in the girls practice we do a lot of drills and running to make us better at the sport and get us in shape for our upcoming games. The first week of practice is a conditioning week to really get you in shape.”See a lot of potential. Have a lot of time to improve, which requires hard work.” said -Coach Liebelt, when I asked coach Liebelt what some of the girl’s weaknesses were he replied “Our weaknesses are that we are very inexperienced, everything we are learning is new, we need to improve in attitudes and efforts lacking in intensity”-Coach Liebelt.  I asked Coach Insee the same question and his reply was “Are two biggest weaknesses are height and rebounding.”-Coach Insee

How is the season looking? “We have some more Interest than last year. We have a lot of improvements to make and a lot to learn. If the players buy into the program then we have a chance to win some games”-Cody Liebelt “Our season is looking very promising”- Coach Islee.

Basketball's New Season
By Joseph Fisher

Starting last Monday, basketball season started. This year we will have a lot of new faces joining the old on the court. We will concur the court, and push to win. I have had the chance to talk with Destiny Peffly, and I interviewed her about the girls team.

I have interviewed Destiny Peffly, who is a freshman girls basketball player this year. I asked her about the practices. She had this to say, "They are hard, because we have to run a lot to get into shape." I then asked what her goals were for this year. "To become a better basketball player and to get better on my dribbling and defense." My final question for her asked what her goals as a team were. "To beat Garden Plain and to go to state."

Overall, this year is going to bring us to state. The girls basketball teams first game will be December 5th at Conway Springs. Come down and cheer on our girls and see them win. We will see you next time here, on the Roadrunner Blog.

The Teams Success

By: Jake Hysom

The Chaparral football team had a great year this year, but they had their  up and downs, however, the spirit of the Roadrunners remained the same, unstoppable. At the beginning, they were doing amazing, they won every game, until we lost to Wichita trinity. But did that change the school spirit? No! Their recordgoing into playoffs was 9-1, which was the fourth best record in the league. They played bluestem Tuesday, the Chaparral Roadrunners won, then they plays halstead, which the Chaparral Roadrunners lost, 36-27.

The football team has had success over the years, because chaparral is the best! the football team here began in the 1971 the first trophy for football was won in 1978. This is the first year Chaparral won a playoff game since 1989. They have a bunch of great seniors, who worked hard in the off season, to lead the team. Also in 1978, the have won sub state. Our most recent trophy was bi-district runner up, which was won in 2012.

Over the years since 1971, Chaparral had its ups and downs, but no matter what, the soul of the school hasn't changed a bit. Sure, the Fans of Chaparral were sad, but the spirit of them hasn't changed just an ounce. This year, I am most certain the fans were proud of the Roadrunners for their great success.

Lets Go Lady Runners,Win Sub-State!
By:Kyli Craig

On October 23, 2014 the Chaparral Volleyball girls participated in the sub-state tournament. Pep club had a brilliant idea to put a few of our football boys on a "Pom Squad". those who participated were Estin Overton, Ethan Francis, Roger Clark, Shawn Nulik, Haden Craig, Jaden Helms, Tharon Eslinger, Adrian Gerber, and Adam Clark. This group of boys is very funny and outgoing. They are very coachable and learned the the dance easily.

The dance was a mix of various of music."She Got A Donk" by Soldier Boy is the first song, and is followed by a Lion King song " The Circle Of Life". These two songs are very different, but once the boys put the dance moves together it turn out perfect. After that they danced to the pop single by Miley Cyrus "Wrecking Ball" and "Show Stopper" by Danity Kane and others. The dance is a seven minute remix and the boys only had three practices to prepare. They seem like they had fun doing the dance routine. Maybe a little too much because of the fact that they had to act like a girl, they really went all out. Also the choreographers are Kyli Craig, Dana Craig, and Callie Menhusen. Those girls did an amazing job choreographing that whole dance.

According to some people they say that the pep rally was the best one they have ever had! "I loved it so much” one of the volleyball girls said while cheering and watching the boys make a fool of themselves. The boys tried their best and succeeded. Their eye-high line kick was on time and perfect. The boys had every step down and on time. Good job boys!

The girls loved the dance that the boys gave them. They made sure that they dedicated the dance to those girls and it was just all out amazing dance. This is an awesome way to start sub-state.

Girls Playing Football
By: Emerald Young

Have you ever wondered why girls don't play high school football? Girls play on the elementary kids football teams sometimes. In the movie The Longshots Keke Palmer plays a girl named Jasmine who has a talent for throwing a football and her uncle Curtis (O'shaya Jackson) turns that talent into a passion for the game. He talks her into trying out for a football team. The coaches and the rest of the team are against a girl playing football, but she still gets a spot on the team and proves them all wrong. So why don't girls play football in high school?

Here at Chaparral there hasn't been a girl on the football team in all the years that Justin Burke has been the coach. There was a girl on the football team before he became the coach who played her freshman and sophomore year. Most of the time when girls play football they play when they are younger, in their elementary school years. As the girls and boys grow into young men and woman the amount of females that play the sport decrease.

It's not that girls can't play, just that it's harder for a girl to play football. Boys are usually bigger, stronger and faster than girls and are more physically built. It's also harder to find a place for the girl to change when they travel for games. One big issue with females playing football is the nature of the game. Football is very physical and some of the blocking, tackling, grabbing, twisting, and pulling becomes somewhat uncomfortable with boys and girls together. Girls playing football is rare and challenging but not impossible.

Roadrunners Scalp Indians On Homecoming Night
By Jarret Fox

It was a great day for homecoming and football last Friday as the 2-1 Chaparral Roadrunners took on the 1-2 Medicine Lodge Indians. After the homecoming ceremony and the Star-Spangled Banner was played by the Chaparral band we were finally ready for kickoff.

In the first quarter, the Runners started out on a fast pace as Shawn Nulik ran for an early Chaparral touchdown. The very next drive, Chaparral linebacker Pierce Bringer was helped off the field as he left the game with an arm injury. Later in the quarter, Shawn Nulik connected with Roger Clark for a Chaparral touchdown to add to the Roadrunners early lead.

In the second quarter, Shawn Nulik ran for his second touchdown of the night but the Medicine Lodge Indians came back quickly with a touchdown of their own. On the kickoff, Ramon Valderez returned the kick all the way back into the Indians territory. That play later set up a long touchdown run by Shawn Nulik. The defense even got into some of the scoring action as Roger Clark returned an interception all the way back for another Runners touchdown. The agony continued for the Indians as Shawn Nulik and Weston Schroeder also found the end zone before the first half was over.

After a 52-8 halftime score Shawn Nulik found the end zone for his fifth touchdown of the night and scored the only points of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter the Runners then put in their Junior Varsity team who only allowed one Medicine Lodge touchdown just before the winding minutes. The Roadrunners won with a final score of 58-15 to advance their record to 3-1.

2014-2015 Basketball Season

By Denver Hartson

The boys Chaparral High School basketball team is expecting great things for the upcoming season. They are missing some good players from last season, but they also have some very good players returning with the addition of a new foreign exchange student. While also bringing in two new coaches for the freshmen/sophomore and junior varsity teams.  There are some very good seniors that are going to lead our team this year returning to the team, which will help this years team out a lot in winning more games. Last season our  boys basketball team lost in the first round of sub state, but this year they have much higher expectations. It's the last year for the seniors and they want to finish their last season strong.  The juniors want to finish high and start on a high note next year. Everybody puts in the work to get better during the off season some players play summer leauge basketball to get better. During the school year before the season some players play a fall sport such as football or cross country.  Which helps them get in shape and more ready for basketball which to strive for a great season.
